Doris Allen-Wood
Originally from Virginia, I have an Associate Degree in Management from the National Business College.
I moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina two and a half years ago. Presently, I am homeless. This is something that happened, not where I envisioned my life to be. I have learned to accept the things I cannot change for now. Encountering many trials and tribulations along the way. Living like this is complicated. From finding a place to eat, using a restroom, to taking a shower, to parking my vehicle. Yet, I have faith that I can do this. This is where I found peace of mind... sleeping in my vehicle.
One day I met a homeless man who also slept in his vehicle. He told me about a place called, St. Mary's Soup Kitchen. This is where I could get a hot meal. There is an office across from the Soup Kitchen. So I asked them what they do. Here is where I met a wonderful lady by the name of Sue and a man named Mike. Catholic Outreach as I soon found out, has touched the lives of hundreds of homeless people, including mine! From paying for eye check-ups to purchasing eyewear, to providing transportation to Doctors Offices, surgery, to helping me pick out the right Medicare plan, etc... Mike even delivered my eyeglasses while I was at work, This is LOVE.
All my life I wanted to be remembered for something good I've done in my life. This is where I have HOPE to help the homeless people. When the coronavirus broke out, I focused on not just helping myself but all homeless people. I started calling and emailing our Representatives. From Mayor Gettys, Governor McMaster, Senator Ralph Norman to President Trump. I contacted the Homeless Coalition, Housing Authorities, Salvation Army. We need help, more affordable housing. I let them hear my voice... the voice of the homeless.  We are human too. We vote, we breath, we are all EQUAL REGARDLESS of RACE or CREED.
All in all... I want to thank Sue and Pete Fullerton for showing me what "LOVE IS". Everyday, they give a part of themselves. And when Sue asked me to be on the Advisory Board for Her Place...I felt like this is where I need to be.
When God said, in 1Corinthians 13:13 faith, hope and love... the greatest of these is LOVE...
